What's in the news...

We spend a lot of time looking through various publications for ideas to enhance RecyclingExpert. Below are some snippets of news items that we found interesting in the last month or two:

Bin Charge for Recycling Boost
'Spies in the bin' technology has been installed in preparation for a revamp of rubbish collections. The idea is to send bills to homes according to how full bins are.

Councils are spending millions of pounds to buy the bins with micro chips fitted, truck-weighing equipment and computer software. Lorries will be fitted with technology to read the chips to calculate each household bill. Ministers argue the controversial tax is intended to encourage recycling.

Green Checkouts at Supermarket
The supermarket chain Waitrose is introducing "green checkouts" to 14 of its stores next week. The checkouts are an attempt to reduce the number of plastic carrier bags used by customers.

Shoppers won't be offered plastic bags at any of the "green tills" and will be expected to bring their own previously used plastic carrier bags or re-usable shopping bags.
